Shay is 16 and based in Tramore, and if there are waves, chances are you’ll find him in the water. Surfing isn’t just something he does — it’s a big part of his everyday life.
How it all started
Shay got into surfing when he was around seven or eight, after taking part in a few Tbay competitions. That’s when it really clicked for him. What started off as a bit of craic turned into something much more serious pretty quickly.
From then on, he wasn’t just going out for a surf — he was focused on getting better every time he hit the water.
A typical week
There’s no such thing as a quiet week when you’re chasing waves. Shay surfs pretty much every day there’s swell. On school days, he fits it in before or after classes — sometimes both if the conditions are good.
When he’s not in the sea, he’s working on stretching and strength training to stay fit and keep improving. It’s all part of the routine.
Favourite spot
When it comes to favourite waves, Tramore is right up there. The peak suits his style — nice pace, clean sections, and plenty to work with.
What’s next?
Shay’s got his sights set on doing well on the Irish junior tour and making the Irish team for the ESF European Junior Championships.
Longer term, he’s aiming to compete on the full WSL tour — and with the way he’s going, he’s definitely on the right track.
Still early days, but Shay’s already showing serious potential. One to keep an eye on for sure.
